KUCHING: Padungan Area Committee and the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) are working together to help restore the Padungan area to its former glory as the centre of Kuching’s golden triangle.

“It is very shameful, being the centre of the golden triangle, when the government is talking about tourism and development in the capital city, and Padungan area is being left out.

“In my memory, for the past 10 years there have been no further funds coming down to do anything in Padungan, as you can see the drains apart from flushing and some light maintenance,” said Kuching SUPP vice-president and Padungan Area Committee advisor Datuk Lily Yong at a press conference today.

MBKS mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng was pleased that the Padungan Area Committee was formed and was working with MBKS to discuss the concerns of the Padungan community.

“Working together with Padungan Area Comittee is a very good idea because of community engagement where it will be the starting of 50 per cent success because this area is the rice bowl of the people making business and living here.

“I’m sure the people living and doing business here will put in the best interest that they have to make sure Padungan will be alive again.”

In another development, MBKS will start doing some spring cleaning in the back lanes and some of the repair works next week as an initial step.

“We must fix the side lanes and the back lanes so the shophouses can have two frontages that will benefit the businesses here.

“I hope that the shop owners could help support us because without their support we would not be able to achieve our target.

“We can’t solely depend on the authority and that is why we want to gather the Padungan community to cooperate, to push for the future of Padungan together even if it takes five years or so, but still we have to start somewhere,” Wee added.

Also present were Padungan Area Committee chairman Lucas Yong, vice-chairman Oscar Choo, secretary Angel Teo, treasurer Kueh Kui Hua, and members.
