KUCHING: Sarawak students in Great Britain have been encouraged to return home to take up job opportunities that will be available following recent developments back home.

Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Hazland Abang Hipni, who recently met up with 15 students from the Sarawak Students’ Association at a meet-up session hosted by the Yayasan Sarawak office in London, cited the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63)  as an example where jobs will be aplenty for talented Sarawakian youth abroad to contribute effectively to the state’s development following the restoration of several rights.

Students from universities such as the London School of Economics, Imperial College London and University College London attended the session, which was also attended by Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Adenan.

Dr Hazland took the opportunity to brief the students on Sarawak’s decision to set up the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability in line with the global issue of climate change mitigation and the use of renewable clean energy like hydro power, solar and wind.

“This will be given top priority and the state will be taking an active role in this regard as Sarawak has been blessed with natural resources, for example huge areas of forests, mangrove, peat, and rivers, and a stable government under visionary and futuristic Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg,” Dr Hazland’s ministry said in a press release.

The 45-minute session was chaired by Yayasan Sarawak London liaison officer Kasubi Bakir.

The students said they felt a deeper connection with their home state following the session and were proud of the strides Sarawak was making in terms of renewable clean energy development and sustainability.

They said the session was an opportunity for students to gain insights into the development of their home state, adding the restoration of some of the MA63 rights would allow Sarawak to play an active role in managing its own affairs.
