KUCHING: The private sector has been encouraged to work alongside the Sarawak government to stimulate the growth of the rice industry in the state.

With more than 80,000 hectares of paddy fields in the state, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the industry is crucial for thousands of farmers, and it supports the livelihoods of many rural communities.

“At the same time, the Sarawak government is committed to supporting the local rice industry through various initiatives, including research and development, training and incentives for farmers,” he said at the launch of the Jimmy Contest 6 by Liansin at AEON Mall here yesterday (Apr 15).

Additionally, Wee urged the public to support and promote high-quality rice brands like Liansin to enhance productivity and quality in the rice industry.

“By promoting high-quality rice, we can improve the health of our people, reduce poverty, and drive economic growth in Sarawak.

“Despite the importance, it still faces challenges including climate change, pests and diseases, which can lead to low yields and high production costs.

“Therefore, this contest also serves as a platform for the promotion of high-quality rice and the advancement of the rice industry in Sarawak,” he said.

The Jimmy Contest 6 commenced on Apr 1 and will last until Mar 31 next year.

Individuals can purchase selected rice packs to receive a contest card, then scan the QR code on the card with Liansin Rewards App to participate in the contest.

The contest offers a grand prize of a Honda HR-V along with other seasonal prizes valued at a total of RM250,000.

Also present at the launching ceremony were Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Sarawak director Mathew Dominic Barin and Liansin Head of Group Account and Finance Goh Kim Hui.
