SIBU: The Sarawak United People Party (SUPP) Dudong Branch has called on the federal government to address the weakening of the local currency.

Its chairman Wong Ching Yong said that compared to foreign currencies like the Singapore dollar, our local currency has significantly depreciated. For instance, one Singapore dollar is now equivalent to RM3.46, which is a cause for concern.

“I urge the government to take action to stabilise the ringgit and prevent further depreciation,” Wong said during a media briefing held at Jalan Mantis today (June 25).

Wong, who is also the deputy chairman of the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), called upon the two Members of Parliament (MP) here to address the economic challenges and hardships faced by Sarawakians.

Meanwhile, Dr. Wong Chya Wei, the vice chairman of SUPP Dudong, who was also present at the briefing, criticised the government for its lack of action in improving the country’s economy amid the ongoing economic downturn.

“The weakening local currency is particularly concerning for those of us with children studying abroad. The expenses and fees are increasing day by day. As we continue to earn the same amount in Malaysian Ringgit, supporting our children’s education overseas becomes an added burden for families,” Dr. Wong said.
