Rioters repent, turning themselves in

KUCHING: Ten men, who were involved in a riot at Jalan Stutong Baru were fined RM2,000 each by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

The accused, aged between 22 and 51, admitted to rioting, and caused injuries to the public and damage to properties at 12.30am on June 21 at a bistro premises in Jalan Stutong Baru here.

All of them were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting, which provides a jail term of up to two years, or with a fine, or both, if convicted.

According to the facts of the case, a complainant and five of his friends, who were sitting in the bistro, were attacked and pelted with various items by ten unidentified men.

The complainant and his friends, who suffered injuries, then fled before being treated at the Sarawak General Hospital.

However, around 2am, on the same day, the men who attacked the complainant turned themselves in at a police station and paid their fines.
