OYA: There are more smiles and joy for the locals here with the completion of the new riverfront project called ‘Rancangan Memulihkan Koridor Sungai (RMKS)’ Batang Oya thanks to the efforts of a local representative and a federal minister.

Cooperatives and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar officiated at yesterday’s opening of the RMKS in a simple ceremony at Pekan Sabtu Oya here.

He was impressed with the project while saying that a lighting system would improve its look especially at night.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah applied for allocation for the project from Wan Junaidi about five years ago, and it was later approved.

The Dalat assemblyman expressed her thanks to the federal minister for the approval.

According to the project implementing agency, Mukah Division Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), work to construct the 200 metres footpath and other components began on July 23, 2019 and scheduled to complete on July 22, 2020.

Two extension of time (EOT) were given by DID to the contractor, Aldona Contractor, on Oct 14, 2020 and Jan 22, 2021, before the project valued at RM3.05 million was completed on Jan 22, 2021.

The other components in the project included gabion protection wall, slope protection with armour rock, reinforced concrete drain, and a floating pontoon.

The construction of the 110 metre-long concrete footpath was implemented earlier on, thus increasing it to a combined length of 310 metres now.

Earlier, Wan Junaidi and Fatimah attended a briefing by Malaysia Cooperatives Commission (SKM) at Oya community hall here.
