KUCHING: A total of RM1.53 million has been distributed to 449 mosques and 1,083 surau throughout Sarawak in line with the upcoming fasting month.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg said it is a custom for the annual contribution to be disbursed for the religious houses to organise their activities during Ramadan.
“This will help reduce the burden of mosques and surau while all of us are performing our worship during Ramadan.
“I thank all who have contributed to Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak (TBS) which allowed us to help all mosques and surau throughout Sarawak,” he said when presenting the contribution yesterday.
During the ceremony, Abang Johari presented the cheques to Sarawak State Mosque Welfare Trust Board (LAKMNS), four mosques and one surau in the Kuching area.
The recipients are Masjid Darul Hana, Masjid Al-Hidayah, Masjid Darul Ibadah, Masjid Al-Abyad and Surau Bandarsah.
Abang Johari said this also showed that the economy was slowly getting back up on its feet despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Thankfully, our income is good. While the economy declined last year, there are still companies paying their zakat to TBS.
“This means that the economy is not doing too badly and at the same time we can perform our worship and help the targeted communities,” he said.
Also present were Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi and Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) president Datuk Misnu Taha.
