KUCHING: A total of 487 fishermen in the constituency of Jepak received their assistance which totalled up to RM1.664 million.

Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip presented the assistance to the recipients in a ceremony at Kampung Jepak Hulu in Bintulu today.

Among the assistance presented were the Fishermen’s Monsoon Season Aid (BMTN) and Fishermen’s Fishing Equipment Input Assistance (BIPPN) as well as the Agricultural Facilitation Fund (AFF).

Some 184 recipients received the BMTN worth RM276,000 while 194 recipients received BIPPN worth RM388,000. Meanwhile 109 received the AFF worth RM1 million.

“The assistance aims to improve the people’s quality of life and alleviate their burdens. It was part of the 2020 State Budget presented in Nov 2019.

“A total of RM9.1 million BMTN has been allocated to be distributed to 5,609 fishermen and another RM20 million has been allocated for BIPPN for 4,268 fishermen statewide.

“It was first channelled by the Sarawak government last May and continued until Dec 2020,” Talib said

Talib added that BMTN and BIPPN are among the 81 Initiatives of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government.

The Jepak assemblyman also hoped that the fishermen will take advantage of this assistance and use it to their best to improve their socio-economy.

During the ceremony, he also released 3,000 lobster seeds to Sungai Kemena at Kampung Jepak Hulu Jetty as a symbolic opening of the programme.
