RM1 million to build chapels in Balingian

Date:

KUCHING: A total of RM1 million in grants from the Unit for Other Religions (Unifor) were distributed in Balingian for the purpose of building three chapels.

Balingian assemblyman Abdul Yakub Arbi said Chapel St. Mary, Kampung Suyong, Balingian and Chapel St. Joseph, Kampung Sesok, Mukah each received RM450,000 while Kampung Sau Chapel, Mukah received an allocation of RM100,000.

“Thanks to Unifor and also thanks to Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, who is minister-in-charge of the unit for his concern for the people in Balingian,” he said after presenting the grants to representatives of the chapels at his service centre in Balingian recently.

During the ceremony, Abdul Yakub also presented minor rural project (MRP) grants amounting to RM34,000 to several associations in the Balingian area to carry out their activities.

He urged the recipients to use the grants for their intended purposes and report to the authorities upon completion of their projects or activities.

“This is to ensure transparency in the management of funds and activities for each body or club,” he said.

Earlier, while officiating at the Balingian sub-district community policing programme, Abdul Yakub urged community and tribal leaders to be the eyes and ears of agencies such as the police and the Health Department.

The programme was organised to strengthen the role of community leaders in monitoring, coordinating and organising activities in their respective villages and longhouses.

This includes raising public awareness on the dangers of the Covid-19 among the community.
