RM192 mln cash aid given out in 2017

SIBU: A total of 7,362 people across the state including 2,097 people from this division are receiving cash assistance under ‘Sejambak Kasih’ programme in conjunction with this year’s Chinese New Year celebration.

Minister of Welfare, Community Well-Being, Women, Family and Childhood Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said that the assistance given to the recipients was aimed to ease the burden of those celebrating Chinese New Year.

Fatimah, who is also Dalat State Assemblywoman, added that the cash assistance under Sejambak Kasih was given to eligible recipients during festivities such as Christmas, Hari Raya, Gawai Dayak and the upcoming Chinese New Year.

In total, the government had disbursed RM192,511,000 for 57,588 monthly aid recipients in Sarawak last year. “Of this amount, RM28,211,900 was given to 8,484 recipients in Sibu Division.

“There were also immediate assistance (one-off assistance) to those affected by disasters like fires, landslides, strong winds, floods and so on,” she said during the Sejambak Kasih programme in conjunction with this year’s Chinese New Year celebration held at Tanahmas Hotel here yesterday.

Fatimah revealed that a total of 200 recipients who were invited to the programme and would be celebrating the Chinese New Year celebration in Sibu would receive RM100 and a hamper worth RM50 each under the programme. As for those who were not invited to the programme, the contributions would be deposited into their bank accounts.
