KAPIT: The Sarawak government has approved an allocation of RM2 million for repair works of the Kapit’s iconic Lily Pond.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that he has agreed to the matter after being briefed on the pond’s need for repairs.

“We will continue to enhance this area because it is a tourism attraction in the Hulu Rajang area,” he said following a work visit to the Lily Pond today.

With other developments, he predicted that economic activity in Kapit Division would expand in the next four to five years.

“I believe that the airport in Bukit Mabong will be completed in three years, and this will further opening up this area.

“It would pass through Baleh, directly to Belaga, and from Belaga to Bintulu. So, this is our long-term plan for Kapit,” he pointed out.

On another note, he said an allocation of RM190 million has been approved for upgrading works to widen roads throughout Kapit town until the main road to reduce traffic congestion.

“We perceive that Kapit is similar to Kuala Lumpur in terms of traffic congestion caused by the existing route.

“And when there are a lot of cars, it means that the income of the rural population has already increased.

“You can’t deny that; there needs to be an increase in income in this area, otherwise, there will be no cars.

“As a result of the traffic congestion, the development and economics in the Hulu Rajang has improved,” he stressed.

Apart from improving the roads, Abang Johari suggested that smart traffic lights be installed to better regulate traffic.

“I have requested the Ministry of Local Government and the Ministry of Transport to visit Kapit and see where the smart traffic lights may be installed,” Abang Johari said.
