KUCHING: A total of RM20 million was recently allocated for the building of a river embankment as part of the flood mitigation project in Desa Wira, said Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian.
“Desa Wira has been a flood prone area and the situation was worsened by the unprecedented rapid development of Batu Kawa in the last few years,” he said in a Facebook post on Friday.
Earlier, he visited the project site of the river embankment with Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) director Datuk Chok Moi Soon, deputy director Law Wee, divisional engineers and local leaders.
Dr Sim said the river embankment will be about 2km in length and will serve multiple purposes to the residents.
“It is not just for flood mitigation but also incorporates a jogging and cycling path. It can be our ‘mini Holland’ scenery serving as a tourist attraction and support the local economy of the community,” he said.
The Batu Kawa assemblyman said with the funding allocated, the next step will be appointing a project consultant, the design stage and open tender so the project can commence as soon as possible.
In a separate programme, Dr Sim also visited the project site of the drainage upgrade project implemented in Batu Kawa.
“I am relieved to see that work have commenced by the contractors who were appointed through open tender for Lorong 17 and Lorong 17A of Desa Wira,” he said.
He added that drainage upgrade works have been planned for 15 alleys last year and this year. Seven of the alleys have started their drainage upgrade but the rest were delayed due to the movement control order (MCO).
“This project is part of the RM120 million drainage upgrade project in Desa Wira and the flood mitigation project for Batu Kawa,” he said.
