RM2,000 fine for possessing nospan pills

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to a fine of RM2,000 or three months in prison by the Sessions Court today for possessing 107.2 grams of nospan pills in September.

Session Court Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman handed down the sentence to Dalie Sindu, 51, after pleading guilty to one charge under Section 9(1) of the Poisons Act 1952, and punishable under Section 32(2) of the same act.

The 51-year-old accused from Kampung Semariang Jaya committed the offence in the area under the Masja Bridge, Jalan Astana at around 3.30pm on September 15.

According to the facts of the case, the police arrested Dalie on suspicion of drug-related activities that evening.

The police asked him if he had any incriminating objects in his possession, and he then handed over a white plastic bottle.

The police found that the bottle contained 730 white pills suspected to be nospan (cough suppressant).

The pills were confiscated and weighs 107.2 grams. The accused, who was not represented by a lawyer, pleaded for a reduced sentence.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff asked for an appropriate punishment to be imposed because it is necessary to take into account the seriousness of the offense and the increasing number of cases.
