SIBU: Sarakup Indu Dayak Sarawak (Sids) Sibu will host the 7th Edition State Pua Kumbu Weaving Competition.
Sids Sibu chairperson Angelyn Uchi Maseng said RM20,000 in prize money is up for grabs.
“The objective of organising this annual competition is to encourage Iban women to get involved in the weaving of pua kumbu and to develop it as a legacy to be inherited by all Iban women to be used as a handicraft product,” she told reporters here yesterday.
The competition started yesterday and participants are given until May 4 to submit their Pua Kumbu for judging.
“Among the rules and conditions of the competition are that the competition is open to all Pua Kumbu weavers in Sarawak irrespective of their age.
“This competition is divided into two categories, namely Category 1 for Pua Kumbu (cotton) and Category 2 (weaved skirt),” she said.
Each woven fabric should be labelled or marked “SIDS SIBU 2019” on the edges of the fabric for both categories.
The entries will be marked based on design and coatings (40 percent); colour (30 percent); composition, authenticity and origin (15 percent); and quality, weaving and creativity (15 percent).
“The results of the competition and the prize-giving ceremony will be announced sometime in May. However, the matter is still being discussed and we will announce the date and venue later,” she added.
Entries can also be submitted to Uchi at Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), Wisma Sanyan, 96000 Sibu (016-8825861); Priscilla Bunsi David, Kemas Sibu Office, 8th Floor, Wisma Persekutuan Block 3, 96000 Sibu (019-8771840 / 084-333560); or Mundun Undau at Sibu Water Board (016-8783894) before May 4.
