KUCHING: The state has set aside a sum of over RM200 million for the construction of the new i-CATS University College near Kampung Trombol at Telaga Air, here.

In disclosing this, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the construction of the new campus will start next year.

“The construction of the new campus aims to offer more educational opportunities to the people of Sarawak regardless of their race.

“We chose Trombol because it is for Sarawak students and with the campus located near the sea, students can study and at the same time can enjoy the sea breeze,” he said as reported by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) in a news report today.

Earlier, Abang Johari was speaking at the ‘Randau Belia Islam Dengan Premier’ programme at the Islamic Complex here.

The Premier also said the cost of building the new campus is fully borne by the Sarawak Government.

“Since I lead the state, Sarawak’s revenue has doubled. During my 40-year career as a leader, the highest revenue for the state which I saw was RM6 billion, but today, it is valued at RM10 billion.

“That’s why I have the courage to build a new i-CATS University College campus in Kampung Trombol as we already have the money,” he said.

With the completion of the new campus, Abang Johari said it will provide more opportunities for the people in the state to acquire knowledge and skills.

At the same time, he said, as a result of the increase in income, the Sarawak Government has taken over and fully owns Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, Curtin University Malaysia Sarawak campus, Sarawak University of Technology (UTS) in Sibu and upgraded i-CATS as a university college and improved the Sarawak Center of Technical Excellence (CENTEXS) as a training centre.
