KUCHING: A total of 1,124 cartons of illicit cigarettes worth RM202,000 were seized at a commercial centre in Kota Sentosa on Wednesday.

Sarawak General Operations Force Brigade (GOF) conducted a raid, Ops Libas, at Jalan Tapang in Kota Sentosa at 5.10pm.

According to deputy commander of Sarawak GOF, ACP Hakemal Hawari, the raid was carried out by a team of police personnel and 10 GOF personnel, led by officer ASP Norman Chendan Philip Picha Rumpang, and four Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) personnel.

“The team found a total of 1,124 cartons of contraband cigarettes with unpaid duty being kept in the premises,” he said in a statement.

Hakemal also revealed that 208,800 sticks of regular cigarettes in 1,044 cartons worth RM187,920 and 12,800 sticks of kretek (clove) cigarettes in 80 cartons worth RM14,080 were also seized during the raid.

The cigarettes were handed over to Padawan District Police headquarters for further action and investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
