RM290,000 contraband beer, fags seized

Contraband beer and cigarettes seized from three premises last Wednesday.

SARIKEI: The General Operations Force (GOF) here seized contraband beer and cigarettes worth over RM290,000 at three separate locations last Wednesday (Feb 23).

GOF 10th Battalion commanding officer Supt Mohamad Hafiz Kadir said in a statement, the raids were carried out under ‘Ops Kontraban’ from 2 pm onwards.

He revealed that 58 boxes of beer and 215 cartons of cigarettes worth RM42,653.52 including tax were seized in the first raid  carried out at a coffee shop in Jakar town,   

“The team raided another shop not far from the first location and managed to seize 408 cartons of beer and 39,800 cigarette sticks worth RM101,072.56 including tax.

“Meanwhile, during the third raid at a freezer store at Jalan Bazaar, the team seized 976 cartons of cigarettes worth RM148,670 including tax,” he added.

Hafiz pointed out that the total seizure value from all three raids was RM292,396.68 including tax.

The GOF team also arrested three men aged between 20 and 30, believed to be involved in the illegal activities.

“All three had failed to submit any valid documents on  ownership of the goods.

“The suspects and seizures were handed over to the Sarikei police headquarters for further action,” he said.

The cases are being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
