RM3.95m to build dyslexia centre

KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has agreed in principle to grant an allocation worth RM3,954,500 for the construction of the dyslexia centre in Batu Kawa here.

Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the decision was made during a courtesy visit by the Dyslexia Association of Sarawak to the chief minister at his office in Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.

The delegation was led by Fatimah, who is also the association’s advisor.

“In principle, the chief minister has agreed to the application of RM3,954,500 for the construction of the Dyslexia Centre.

“It will be built on a 1.5 acres piece of land in Desa Wira, which was given by the state government,” she said.

The piece of land was granted by the state government to the association on Dec 24, 2014, to build a new learning and resource centre. It is located at Lot 6592, Block 225, KNLD, Desa Wira, Batu Kawa.

According to Fatimah, the association has work earnestly to raise funds for the building since 2014 through various activities like charity runs.

The new teaching and learning centre will have 10 classrooms, assessment rooms, office, staff room, multi-purpose hall and a hostel to cater to children and their families from outside Kuching.

Amongst those present during the visit were the association’s patron Datin Azerina Mohd Arip, president Dr Ong Puay Hoon as well as members Hajah Zainab, Sia Chun Huat, Felix Wee, Edward Lee Swee Leng, Shanui Shabas, Lily Kong and Dick Yong.

Dyslexia is a learning difference due to the variation in the structure and function of the brain.

It is characterised by an inability to recognise letters and combination of them, problems in reading, writing, speaking and listening, despite adequate teaching, home environment, motivation, intelligence and senses (vision, hearing and touch).
