KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has approved an allocation of RM343mil to the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development during the tabling of the Supply (2024) Bill on Monday (Nov 20).

A significant portion, 65 per cent or RM223.4mil, is dedicated to strategic programmes fostering human capital and talent development in Sarawak.

“Among the highlights of the 2024 Budget are 15 programmes aimed at benefitting 119,770 Sarawak students,” according to a statement.

Notable initiatives include a RM500 book voucher for 35,000 university and college students, a free laptop programme benefitting 5,000 students from low-income households, and an extended free tuition programme covering Form 3 to Form 5 students, benefitting an estimated 58,520 B40 household students.

“Additionally, the uniform assistance programme sees an expansion, providing essential school attire and supplies to an additional 10,000 students.”

Furthermore, the local scholarship programme receives a significant boost, with an approved sum of RM6mil, doubling from the previous year and benefitting 11,250 students.
