KUCHING: Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kevin Yii gave an allocation of RM38,000 to SK Tabuan Ulu to help the school repair its toilets, upgrade its guardhouse and purchase public adddress (PA) system for its assembly hall. The allocation would also be used to beautify its landscape too. Yii presented the grant to the school’s headmaster Mohtar Bin Mohd Ali when he visited the school yesterday afternoon.

In addition to the grant, Yii also donated another RM5,000 to the school’s Parents-Teachers Association (PTA). During his third visit to the school yesterday afternoon he met up with the headmaster and teachers of the school. It was a follow up on the needs and issues faced by them as well as the children in the school. He said the school faced many undesirable infrastructure conditions as well as shortage of facilities that could be used for the benefits of the school children.

SK Tabuan Ulu has a total of 295 students including classes for pre-schoolers and pupils with special needs . Out of that figure, 60 per cent of the students are Malays, 30 per cent are Dayaks and the rest consist of Chinese, Indians and other races. Majority of the students attending the school are from the lower socio-economic class with many coming from the squatter areas and nearby villages.

“During my previous visits, we were informed of the dire conditions of many of their buildings, including the toilet area. “On my visit I noticed how the floors of the toilets are old and dirty, and some of the cubicles do not even have doors and many of them are broken with holes due to the building’s old age.

“I was informed that the toilets do tend to get blocked quite often and there is a need to improve the piping in the toilets. “This has caused so much inconvenience to not just the teachers and staff working there, but most importantly the students who have no choice but to use those toilets on a daily basis.

“Besides that, the guard house in their school is made out of wood and is currently in bad condition with some of the wood rotting and in dire need of improvements. They also do not have a proper sound system that can be used during assemblies as the current one is often spoilt and costs a lot to keep repairing and maintaining,” he said.
