KUCHING: A total of RM48.25mil was allocated to Sarawak to conduct tourism activities under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), says Federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
She said the allocation involved nine projects by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) such as tourism facilitation programme, eco-tourism programme as well as Malaysia homestay experience programme.
“Motac through the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) also promotes and markets Malaysia as a destination for international business events, namely Meetings, Corporate Incentive Visits, Conventions and Exhibitions.
“Through various campaigns such as the ‘Malaysia Like Never Before’ campaign and programmes ‘Malaysia Twin Deal’, Sarawak is among the preferred destinations focused in printed magazines, bulletins as well as online website,” she said in a written reply to Dewan Negara Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew on Tuesday (Sept 15).
Nancy said MyCEB had allowed for 22 international business events in Sarawak during 11MP, raking in a total of RM144mil as well as recording a total of 7,075 visits from international delegations.
“In addition, Motac through one of the agencies under its supervision, Tourism Malaysia always helps in terms of participation in the promotion of tourism products at international and local exhibitions.
“In support of the activities carried out by the Sarawak cultural non-governmental organisations (NGO), Motac also channeled financial assistance to promote Sarawak arts and culture programmes at the local and international levels.”
Nancy added that to alleviate the difficulties of cultural NGOs due to the spread of Covid-19, 16 cultural NGOs in Sarawak had also received financial assistance to help them manage their organisations.
