SIBU: A strong public support has enabled Sibu Cancer Care Society to achieve its target of raising RM500,000 for a young cancer patient, Ethaniel Lee Yi Heng.

“Thanks to everyone for their generous donation that have helped us reach our target within 48 hours! This will be a record that we’re all very proud of,” said Sibu Cancer Care Society chairman Dr Clement Chen in a statement.

The society had put out an SOS last Friday, calling for the public to contribute for the expense of the bone marrow transplant of the two-and-a-half-year-old boy.

The costs for all these treatments are roughly RM650,000. The society has already contributed their share of RM150,000.

Ethaniel was diagnosed with acute leukaemia when he was 14 months old.

A donor from Taiwan, whose bone marrow matches the boy, had agreed to donate his bone marrow.

The transplant will take place on Nov 6 and Ethaniel will have to spend at least three months in Kuala Lumpur if any complications should occur before returning to Sibu.

Dr Chen said all the money raised will be used to pay for Ethaniel‘s medical fees.

“The remaining funds will be kept by the society for Ethaniel until the doctor confirmed he is cancer-free. If the fund is not needed, it will be used to support other cancer patients,” he said.

He said that they will keep up with Ethaniel’s progress and will be informing the public from time to time.

“Hereby, I would like to thank all those involved in making this campaign a great success. Lastly, I wish all the best to Ethenial. He is a fighter and he will make it,” he added.
