SIBU: A RM50mil allocation has been approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for the phase two upgrading project of Jalan Oya.

According to Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Michael Tiang Ming Tee on Tuesday (Nov 15), this was announced by Abang Johari during an election campaign on Monday. “It (funding) is used to upgrade the road into four lanes.”

The Pelawan assemblyman also noted that the length of the road was 1.2km and the first phase was being carried out.

“Everyone knows that this road is very congested (as it is located near two schools) and needs to be upgraded for public convenience,” he said.

When asked when phase two would be implemented, Tiang said that “we will only know during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting next week as the State Budget will be announced.”

“We hope that the cost of this road project will be included in the State Budget which will be announced by the Premier himself.

“When it is announced and the budget is in place, this project will go through several procedures such as tender and so on before it starts to be implemented,” he added.

Meanwhile, Tiang denied rumours that the project implementation was due to the election, clarifying that it had been planned a long time back.

“Myself and Chieng Jin Ek (Bukit Assek assemblyman) have been working together and monitoring every project to ensure everything runs smoothly.

“The opposition’s allegation that we only work during election season is untrue and they can see on my social media that I work all the time as a representative of the people,” he stressed.
