KUCHING: The state government has allocated RM8 million to rebuild Darul Naim Mosque at Kampung Lintang here. According to Chief Minister, Datuk Patinggi (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Openg, construction work is expected to start in stages this August.

“RM4 million will be given this year while the remaining RM4 million will be given next year, depending on the progress,” he said when met by reporters after attending a briefing at the mosque at Petra Jaya here yesterday.

Johari said that the project had been approved because the current mosque had experienced a number of leaking problems and other technical problems. “The residents have asked us to build a new mosque with an additional room to hold “akad nikah” (marriage) ceremonies,” he said, adding that the mosque was fully booked each week and had become a favourite venue for “akad nikah” ceremonies among the Muslim community.

Johari added that the project would take approximately 24 months. Also present were Works Minister, Petra Jaya incumbent and Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the seat, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring, Sharifah Hasidah Syeed Aman Ghazali.
