Roadshow to scout for talents, promote Sarawak Games

KUCHING: A statewide cycling roadshow covering the major cities and towns in Kuching, Sibu, Miri and the Serian and Sri Aman Division at different dates will be held for the first time in Sarawak starting in Sibu on Saturday (Aug 19) at the Sibu Town Square.

Organised by the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), the road show which is held to scout for new talents and to promote and help prepare for the coming Sarawak Games or SUKSAR.

The SSC, whose objective is to produce a strong cycling teams in Sarawak for the Sukma and international, will use the roadshow to look for a pool of talents and also to generate interest in cycling. Among the programme of the event which will last the whole day starting from 10am until 5pm will include an introduction to cycling and practical session with special demonstration on the bike to help identify the right talents to be scouted.

Led by Sarawak cycling chief coach and the very experienced Leon Scheper and assisted by his team of three assistant coaches as well as coaches from the Sibu Division who will be on hand to find the potential cyclists for Sukma and international competitions.

The Sibu Resident Office had also helped co-ordinate the event which is expected to draw a big crowd to the event the programme of which  a  stunt bicycle demonstration by a local rider from Kuching in front of invited guests which include some VIPs.

South African-born Schepers who had coached in several countries including Canada, Australia and China will be personally assessing the physical attributes of those cyclists who turn up for the talent identification exercise.

“We will take a look at the build of the potential athletes and develop them through our training programme.

“I am confident to able to find some potentials for the various disciplines such as BMX, mountainbike and even track cyclists,” said Schepers of the forthcoming Roadshow.

After the event in Sibu, the central zone, Miri will be next on Aug 26 as the State recruitment drive look to the north and after that similar ones will also be held in Sri Aman, Serian and Kuching.
