Rotary Club bid to improve village literacy

KUCHING: A fully equipped library and resource centre was handed over by the Kuching Rotary Club to the Kampung Haji Baki Residents Committee on Saturday (Sept 17) to increase literacy among children, students and parents.

“This library is a lifetime project to enhance the literacy of residents and future generations of Kampung Haji Baki, its vicinity and neighbouring village which is estimated to have at least 15,000 people,” said Rotary Club president Chew Teik Seng

“We endeavour to continue this kind of people-centric projects and the next locations will be at Kota Samarahan and Asajaya.

“The effort is also to develop human capital with a series of vocational training post handover,” he said.

Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Lo Khere Chiang witnessed the handover to village chief Sabtuyah Yusuf.

“Rotary Club of Sri Kenyalang, Rotary Club of Kuching Unity City and Rotary Kuching Jaya are pleased to deliver the complete project that we have been undertaking since April to the Residents Committee of Kampung Haji Baki,” said Chew.

According to a press release, the library hopes to uplift and break the cycle of poverty among the B40 and M40 communities.

The library is said to have a Literacy Corner with six sets of refurbished computers and about 2,000 volumes, 1,600 of which were donated by the State Library, Tzu Chi and the public.
