KUCHING: The Rotary Club of Sarikei has taken another step to serve the community by living up to its objectives.

The club has committed itself to combat dengue by supporting the efforts of the Divisional Health Office and Sarikei District Council.

Rotary District 3310 has a Rotary Dengue Epidemic Control Action Group which functions by assisting clubs in the district to conduct anti-dengue activities.

The group also shares ideas, expertise and resources to the clubs in combating dengue.

On 28 February, Rotary Club of Sarikei handed over anti-dengue posters, mosquito repellents and sprays to the Divisional Health Office to enhance their services to prevent the spread of dengue.

These items will be given periodically to the health office. In dengue outbreak areas the posters will be hung to highlight the need of the public to put extra efforts to clean their surroundings and destroy potential Aedes mosquito breeding grounds.

The aerosol sprays will be used inside houses in the dengue outbreak areas while fogging is done outside the house.

The number of dengue cases is on the rise and without the Rotary Club’s efforts and cooperation of the community there would be more dengue outbreak areas.

Hence, Rotary Club of Sarikei urges the people to take charge in combating dengue by not throwing rubbish indiscriminately, recycle, reduce and reuse waste, do not leave containers with water open and scrub pots which hold water and not just emptying them, co-operate with the Health Office and City Council Inspectors, allow them to help you search and destroy mosquito breeding grounds, keep your surroundings clean and neat and protect yourself with mosquito repellents, wear long sleeves shirt/blouse and pants and install mosquito netting on windows.

Fogging only kills adult mosquitoes but the real threat is in the unhatched eggs to which only search and destroy can get rid of them.

Any premises found to harbour dengue mosquitoes can be fined by the Health Department or District Council.
