KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Government has requested for a six-month extension from Singapore before making a decision on the Rapid Transit System (RTS) project, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said today.

He said the extension request until September was to enable the government to examine several issues including the cost of implementing the project.

“We are asking for more time from the Singapore government for us to study other options. Of course, we are looking at the cost of the project, and how we can reduce (the cost) further and how we utilise the project,” he told reporters when asked to comment on the matter at the Parliament lobby here.

The project, which connects Bukit Chagar in Johor to Woodlands, Singapore, is expected to ferry up to 10,000 passengers per hour each way.

Meanwhile, Loke said a meeting would be held with e-hailing service operators on the Road Transport Department’s new regulation requiring a Vocational Licence (PSV-Taxi / E-hailing) application.

“The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) will hold a meeting with the operators this week. We will meet with them, some of whom I understand have already obtained their licences (PSV-Taxi / E-hailing),”he said. – Bernama
