Rubiah seeks third term in straight fight

KOTA SAMARAHAN: A straight fight is shaping up in Kota Samarahan with incumbent Datuk Rubiah Wang (GPS-PBB) pitted against Abang Abdul Halil Abang Naili of Amanah.

The official announcement of their nomination was made by Election Commission (EC) Returning Officer Anuar Da’an in the Kota Samarahan Civic Centre, here on Saturday.

Rubiah was the first to file her nomination papers at 9.01am followed by Abdul Halil at 9.05am.

Earlier, Rubiah, clad in the GPS uniform, and Abdul Halil arrived at the centre at the same time at 8.40am.

Rubiah, 54, was accompanied by her proposer, Sapawi Samat and seconder, Erine Gadul.

Meanwhile, Abdul Halil, 62, was accompanied by his proposer, Awang Julai Awang Udin and seconder, Sajali Pawi.

More than 1,000 GPS supporters were chanting loudly outside the nomination centre, while Amanah supporters, up to 15 of them, waited inside their vehicles.

Parti Pesaka Bersatu vice-president Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah also turned up to show his support for Rubiah around 9.35am.

Rubiah who is seeking a third term has served as the MP of Kota Samarahan since winning the seat in GE13.

In the previous GE14, Rubiah garnered 25,070 votes against Amanah’s Sopian Julaihi (8,078 votes) and Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) Zulkipli Ramzi (2,719 votes).
