Rural products commercialised thanks to improved telco facilities

KUCHING: Katibas constituents are pleased with the efforts by the state government and federal government in equipping the constituency with an improved telecommunication network.

Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan stated that there are many food products such as dabai fruit, empurau fish and tengadak fish in Song area that can be commercialised to the urban areas.

“We are grateful to have telecommunication network in our constituency, but we do hope the speed will be improved and become faster.

“I am happy to see longhouse residents sharing pictures and videos of empurau fish that they caught from the river. Shortly after, their catch received orders from residents in Kuching,” he said today.

Lidam had attended a briefing session on the development of internet network coverage for his constituency by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Sarawak on yesterday.

He pointed out that online marketing allows swift engagements and responses which can improve the livelihood for the rural community.

“The population in Katibas is approximately 20,000 people with 160 longhouses. However, there are some longhouses that experience difficulty or slow internet network.

“As such, it is important for me to find out the development and progress of internet network coverage in my constituency so that the relevant agencies can resolve any problems.

“It is also important for me to convey the expectations of my constituents to the relevant agencies,” he added.

Meanwhile, SDEC chief technical officer Hamadlan Hamdan in said that three towers have completed the first phase for Katibas constituency namely at Nanga Lanang Tekalit, Jalan Balak Lanjan, Song and Nanga Bajor.

“The towers in Nanga Lanang Tekalit and Jalan Balak Lanjan are providing services to users while the tower in Nanga Bajor is waiting for telecommunication equipment to be installed.

MCMC Sarawak director Adiman Ajem said 12 telecommunications towers have been completed under the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) in the constituency.

“We have also upgraded 11 microwave transmission stations to 4G, installed 49 satellite broadband and established a Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family) Digital Economy Centre (PEDi) under JENDELA,” he said.

Also present during the briefing session was Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) Technology Expert (Telecommunication Division) James Bungan and Song District Officer Harry Bruce Edwin.
