KUCHING: A black cow that attempted to escape from being sacrificed for Hari Raya Aidiladha last Friday evening (July 31) has become a favourite topic of conversation for the folk of Kampung Tabuan Haji Drahman here.

The cow had no more than two hours of freedom before being caught again by the determined villagers.

Village chief Wan Sahappudin Wan Abu Kassim, who recalled that the incident occurred about 5.30pm, said, “At that time, the villagers were trying to bring down the cow from a truck for the ‘korban’ (slaughter) ritual.”

He remembered that before the cow could be lowered, the rope around its neck broke and the people who were handling it ran away in fear,” he told New Sarawak Tribune at Majlis Kembara Ibadah Qurban N5 Demak Laut last Saturday (Aug 1).

The cow, he said, also fled from the village to Jalan Tun Razak and then to Three Hills Park in Sekama.

“The villagers realised that they needed help to catch the cow, so they a called the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM).

“After the cow has been successfully caught, we brought it back to the village and slaughtered it on the same night for distribution the next day (Aug 1),” he said.

APM personnel and villagers carry the cow down the hill at Three Hills Park near Sekama, Kuching.

The cow that was estimated to weigh about 350 kilogrammes, was donated by a local villager.

According to a report by APM, three of its members arrived at the scene at 5.45pm and assisted by some villagers, they set a trap.

“The cow was successfully captured and taken from the top of the hill by having it carried by a group of strong men.

It was taken to the place of slaughter and the operation ended just after 7.30pm,” said APM member, Farid Amirul, in a report last Sunday (Aug 2).

No one was injured when the cow ran away and throughout the effort of catching it.
