MUKAH: The Northeast Monsoon season, marking the end of the year, brings with it turbulent sea conditions, rendering maritime activities like fishing, swimming, and other sea-related activities unsuitable.

A recent survey at various beaches here confirmed the absence of such activities due to these adverse conditions.

Yuslan

“During this season, it’s best to avoid maritime or beach activities,” Yuslan Ussop, 42, advised, particularly noting the concurrent school holiday season when children are more likely to engage in beach activities.

“Parents need to be vigilant for their children’s safety, even outside the monsoon season, to prevent any untoward incidents,” he added.

Yuslan also highlighted the importance of heeding advice from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime Malaysia) and recommended carrying Personal Locator Beacon devices during this turbulent season.

“Safety should always be the priority for those still engaging in maritime activities,” he stressed.

Uda

Uda Saini, 48, echoed similar sentiments, urging everyone to exercise caution and avoid sea or river activities during the monsoon. He pointed out the increased risk of river bathing, citing recent threats from wild animals like crocodiles.

“Parents need to monitor or prohibit their children from river bathing, especially now, to avoid the heightened risk of drowning,” he said.

According to Uda, community leaders should enforce strict supervision of children’s swimming activities and noted that fishermen are aware that the current season is not conducive for maritime activities, which could lead to burdensome incidents.

Ahmad

Ahmad Mukarram, 21, advised postponing all maritime activities.

“While some may consider it safe during clear weather, it’s better to postpone these activities as a precaution,” he said.

He urged those who still wish to participate in such activities to use safety jackets to prevent unforeseen incidents and called for public vigilance during the monsoon season.
