KUCHING: The Transport Ministry assured full safety measures were implemented during chartered flights for students returning to Sarawak.

Deputy Transport Minister Hasbi Habibollah gave the assurance in response to certain quarters which accused the government of being lacklustre in implementing the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in transporting students back to their respective hometowns.

According to Hasbi, all students from Sabah and Sarawak who were flown back to their hometowns on special chartered flights had been quarantined for two months in their respective campuses in West Malaysia.

He added that the students were also given swab tests prior to being ferried on sanitised buses to Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

“Upon touching down in Sarawak, these students were also required to be quarantined in quarters arranged by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) for 14 days before being allowed back to their homes,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Hasbi said 7,606 students were ferried back to    Kuching, Bintulu, Miri and Sibu from May 1 to 18.

“All of them underwent the stringent health swab tests before being allowed to return home.

“On the boarding process, social distancing between students was strictly observed based on guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health (MOH) under the conditional movement control order (CMCO),” he added.

Hasbi, who is also Limbang MP, said the health and safety of students and crew were paramount to the government at all times.

“We also strongly urge parents and students to continue obeying the quarantine procedures as part of their social responsibility to help prevent any inadvertent spread of Covid-19 within their communities.

“The public is advised to continue adhering to the CMCO that is in effect until June 9,” he added.
