SIBU: Strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education is an important element in ensuring the continuous development and progress of Sarawak, says Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

According to him, Sarawak would require technical expertise not only in computing but also in other subject areas to drive its digital economy and agriculture, in particular, which would also require a large pool of talents with a strong STEM background.

“Thus, it is important for students to be equipped with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information and these are the skills that the students learned by studying STEM,” said the Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development at the closing ceremony of the 21st Century Learning Enhancement Workshop for Science and Mathematics (DLP) Teachers Song District Primary Schools Phase 3 2022 here on Friday (April 29).

Sagah added that STEM was at the heart of a new wave that was “transforming the way we live and the way we work.”

“The World Economic Forum’s report states that as many as 65 per cent of children in primary schools today will work in new, STEM-based fields in the future when they enter the workforce and, Sarawak is no different.

“We hope our students will think thoroughly and critically so that they may become the innovators, educators, researchers, and leaders who can address the region’s most serious concerns today and in future, in line with the skills needed in the 21st century and Industrial Revolution 4.0.”

Sagah encouraged the participants to keep in touch with each other and keep an eye out for future opportunities for the students. “I hope that this workshop will enable all of you to renew and strengthen your skills.”

A total of 37 teachers from 17 schools took part in the workshop that began on April 26 with the objective to improve students’ performance in STEM education.
