KUCHING: Research on sago which demonstrates its potential for managing blood glucose levels has just won the Asean Energy Awards in Phnom Penh.

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Roland Sagah said in today’s modern diet, most processed foods contain gluten, a protein that is found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye.

“Unfortunately, there are among us those who suffer from gluten intolerance, a condition with symptoms ranging from stomach discomfort to nausea and fatigue, and in extreme cases leading to damage to the digestive system.

“We potentially have the answer to this health condition right here in Sarawak, in the form of our sago plant.

“Animal and human trial studies by CRAUN Research Sdn Bhd have shown that sago is low in glycaemic index, and has blood glucose regulating effects in diabetic rats and in healthy human models,” he said.

Apart from that, he said CRAUN is presently conducting trials to investigate the effect of sago in type-2 diabetes patients and it was his hope that the outcome of this research will be able to position Sarawak’s sago products in the health food industry.

Meanwhile, CRAUN won the Asean Energy Awards for its research on renewable energy from biomass produced by the sago industry.

The research company was awarded the honour under the Off-grid Power Category for its waste treatment technology in October 2022.
