KUALA LUMPUR: Salam Web Technologies MY Sdn Bhd (SalamWeb), an Islamic-based Internet suite of services, will invest US$15 million in the next two to five years to fortify its shariah-compliant SalamWeb Browser, SalamNews, SalamChat and SalamSadaqah, in a bid to encourage ethical Internet usage.

Managing director Hasni Zarina Mohamed Khan said the investment would focus on human resources, technologies and equipment to improve the user experience.

“It is a digital ecosystem for Muslims around the globe to discover, connect, and contribute in a free, safe online environment.

“SalamWeb’s products have been thoughtfully designed to optimise the Islamic way of life. In order to reach ethical browsing, you need a formation of guidelines as Islam has a structured principle. It is different from other browser as it shariah compliant and useful for the community,” she told reporters at the launch yesterday.

On functionality, SalamWeb Browser have inbuilt features such as a Qibla compass, prayer timings and a custom news feed aggregated from verified news sources.

An important feature of the SalamWeb Browser is the SalamProtect, an advanced content filter customised to an individual’s way of life.

SalamProtect alerts users on inappropriate content, allowing them an option to either continue ahead or withdraw from the content.

This includes content which could be potentially explicit, offensive or fraudulent.

SalamProtect also allows users to assign a SalamTag to a website – appropriate, neutral or inappropriate.

Another important feature is SalamSadaqah which incorporates the Islamic practice of Sadaqah (voluntary charity) to the Internet browsing experience, she said.

To encourage the community to be part of the SalamWeb experience, each web search or content report made by users, will be matched to a donation amount made by SalamWeb.

With SalamSadaqah, users can convert their everyday Internet experience to a charitable cause.

On the evolving e-commerce landscape, Hasni Zarina said plans are in the pipeline for future product development in shariah compliant e-commerce platform.

SalamWeb’s parent company is Dubai-based Salam Web Technologies DMCC.
