BINTULU: The Samalaju Port has managed to resolve the issue of its cargo ship turnaround time from 20 days to about four days.

And Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas is particularly pleased with its achievement, where the issue was resolved in October last year, earlier than the given timeframe.

In August last year, the management of Samalaju Port was given until December last year to resolve issues related to the problem of the recovery time of its main ship including cargo ship turnaround time, service efficiency, and others.

“The achievement of Samalaju Port is something to be proud of because its management managed to provide efficient and time-saving shipping and cargo services.

“So, with today’s visit, I am very happy and congratulate the management of Samalaju Port for its achievement,” he said in a press conference after a work visit to the Samalaju Port here on yesterday (Jan 30).

Uggah, who is also Minister of Infrastructure and Port, said that now is the time to chart the direction of Samalaju Port as a world-class port in the Samalaju industrial area.

On a related note, he urged the management of Samalaju Port to continue to maintain excellent service to ensure they become the main choice of industrialists in the Samalaju Industrial Park (SIP) area.

“This is very important because the port is expected to play a very critical role in the industrial development activities of the state where SIP is one of its main growth areas,” he said.

In addition, he said, the port must also strive to improve all essential services including upgrading the necessary infrastructure.

Earlier, Uggah was briefed on the latest development that will take place in the SIP area by the Sarawak Economic Planning Unit (EPU), the Regional Corridor Development Authority (RECODA) and the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA).
