KUCHING: The potential of Kota Samarahan in being a domestic tourism destination will be tapped by the federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) said its minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.

She said the area is home to a host of eco-tourism products that will be further promoted by the ministry.

“We see potential in this area with a pineapple farm which is approximately 800 acres and has more than 100 entrepreneurs or participants working on it.

“Apart from pineapple, there are also other crops such as fruits, vegetables and livestock,” she said when met by reporters at a pineapple farm in Kampung Sungai Mata today.

Nancy added that to turn the pineapple farm into a tourism product, it needed to be equipped with various facilities.

“They also intend to create a homestay, we at Motac have no problem providing training to handle the matter so that it can be a complete place for tourism,” she said.

The Batang Sadong MP said with Kota Samarahan being frequented by local tourists, it will boost the local economy through the sale of its products.

“For example, gula apong is a local product that is difficult to obtain elsewhere, I want the local community to get involved in economic activities like this so that we can together help increase their income,” she said.

Nancy also said that the ministry was identifying other places in Sarawak to be promoted in the same manner as Kota Samarahan.
