KOTA SAMARAHAN: A total of 200,000 visitors are expected to throng the Samarahan Food and Cultural Festival, slated for May 10-19.

The 10-day festival, which will be held at Aiman Mall Kota Samarahan will feature a 57 stalls offering food, drinks, gula apong based desserts and others.

Organising chairlady Dr Florence Christy said the objective of the festival is to introduce and centralise the traditional food in Kota Samarahan, ranging from Malay, Chinese, Iban, Bugis, Bidayuh, Javanese and other ethnic groups.

“Other than that, we want to create an opportunity for food entrepreneurship in Samarahan through business networks starting from the area (Samarahan) all the way to Sebuyau,” she said at a press conference on the upcoming festival here on Wednesday (May 8).

In the meantime, Florence stated that MPKS has received 15 entries for the craft exhibition, adding that 120 entries were received for the Big Bike Gathering and Auto Show, which will be held on May 19, the final day of the festival.

“Participants for the autoshow come from Samarahan, Kuching and even Brunei,” she added.

MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos said Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah will be officiating at the opening of the festival.

“We urge people to visit the festival and to always maintain cleanliness throughout the event,” he said.

He also said that on May 18 there will be an attempt to set a record on the exhibition of various types of local salads (ulam-ulaman) totaling 100 varieties, in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR), which will be witnessed by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Han.
