KUCHING: Three major areas in Kuching city including Carpenter Street, India Street and Kuching Main Bazaar were sanitised by the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and local authorities yesterday (May 30).

The public sanitisation programme involved a total of 32 personnel from three fire stations — Padungan, Tabuan Jaya and Batu Lintang — as well as personnel from Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).

India Street Merchant Association chairman Datuk Wee Hong Seng pointed out that this was to curb the spread of Covid-19 following the increase of positive cases over the past two weeks in nearby areas.

“It is known to the public that Bomba are the experts in handling the use of chemicals to carry out sanitisation especially in public areas.

“Therefore, we ask the community to give their cooperation throughout this programme,” he said when met by reporters in front of Masjid India yesterday morning (May 30).

The programme will first be implemented at public focus areas before moving on to food premises in the city.

He stated that his party will ensure that everyone in Kuching complies with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) as outlined by the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).

Earlier, the sanitisation personnel were briefed on the tasks at hand. They were later divided into three teams and all of them were fully geared with complete personal protective equipment (PPE).
