SANTUBONG has branded itself as one of the popular tourist spots in Sarawak, with its superb natural attractions centred on the rain forested slopes of Mount Santubong, its mangrove forests, rivers, near shore waters and mudflats. These places are also known as homes to a variety of wildlife, making Santubong one of the best sites to see a range of wildlife in a natural setting. The parliamentary constituency of Santubong comprises the state seats of Tanjung Datu (N.3), Pantai Damai (N.4) and Demak Laut (N.5) which are respectively represented by Datuk Patinggi Jamilah Anu, Abdul Rahman Junaidi and Hazland Abang Hipni.

This constituency is prepared to gain changes in the next 10 years when the Barisan Nasional (BN) government undertakes a massive RM2.5 billion tourism development in the constituency.

With a good mixture of Malay, Iban, Bidayuh and Chinese inhabitants, Santubong is noted for its long coastline and a number of beautiful white, sandy beaches fronting the South China Sea. It is one of the best places in Sarawak to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, which inhabits rivers, estuaries and shallow coastal areas. On rare occasions, finless porpoises and Indo-pacific humpback dolphins are sighted in the waters off Santubong.

In addition, a lot of efforts have been made to upgrade the existing tourist attractions in Bako, Muara Tebas, Lundu, Sampadi and Sematan to boost the tourism industry in the scattered areas. Muara Tebas at the mouth of the Sarawak River, which is famous for its huge popular Chinese temple and seafood, will be developed into an integrated modern township.

During the past few decades, large stretches of idle swampy land along Jalan Bako in Sejingkat have been turned into busy industrial, commercial centres and medium cost housing estates. Many employment opportunities have been created in Demak Laut Industrial Park, with more Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) factories being set up in the well planned industrial area near the deep sea of Senari Port, giving boost to the government’s industrialisation programme. Apart from that, a 10-year multi million Ringgit plan has already been set in motion to fully exploit the tourism potential in Lundu, Sematan and Sampadi.

Residents of Telok Melano will be able to travel in comfort with the 33km-long Telok Melano-Sematan road, once fully completed in early 2019, which will impact the lives of around 8,000 people in Lundu and Sematan. The road, which is part of the Pan Borneo Highway, will boost economic activities and contribute to elevating the socio-economic standard of the people.

For a long time, a welfare fund has been in place to help the constituents in education, medical care and natural disaster reliefs. Many are also beneficiaries of the RM200 monthly fishermen allowance. Homestay businesses have been steadily emerging among many villagers, increasing the attention on tourist attraction within Santubong.

Easily reached by road from the state capital, Kuching and with its natural beauty as well as the ongoing residential, commercial and industrial developments, Santubong can become a major player in the country’s quest to attain high-income status. Santubong constituency contains the polling districts of Telok Melano, Pueh, Sebat, Sematan, Seling, Stunggang, Lundu, Perigi, Sekambal , Bajo, Kampung Sebemban, Temelan, Sampadi, Stoh, Rambungan, Telaga Air, Salak, Temenggong, Jaya Bakti, Santubong, Buntal, Rampangi, Sejinjang, Astana, Demak Baru, Semarang, Bintawa, Tanjong Embang, Muara Tebas, Goebilt, Bako, Sejingkat, Senari, Tanjong Bako, Pinggan Jaya, Tabuan Melayu, Muara Tabuan, Tabuan Hulu.
