BINTULU: The search and rescue (SAR) operation for a Myanmar national, who is feared drowned at a beach nearby Samalaju Industrial Port here on Wednesday evening, resumed yesterday.

The SAR, which was immediately mounted upon receiving an alert on the missing man, was suspended at 11pm that night due to bad weather conditions.

According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre (PGO), the SAR was resumed yesterday at 6.43am.

On Wednesday evening at 6.10pm, the victim identified as 27-year-old Aung Thu, went to the beach with seven of his friends — all of whom are Myanmar nationals.

The victim was believed to have been swept away by strong currents while bathing in the sea.

His friends attempted to save him, but to no avail. They later on alerted the Samalaju fire station
