BINTULU: Two boats were deployed to Samalaju beach in the search and rescue (SAR) operation for a Myanmar national who was reported missing on Wednesday evening.

The two assets are from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Marine Police.

This was disclosed by MMEA Bintulu director Capt Shahref Steve Mac Queen Abdullah in a press statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, according to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department operations centre, the search area covers a 1km radius from where the victim was last seen.

The agencies involved in the SAR yesterday were MMEA, Samalaju fire station, Marine Police, Bintulu Civil Defence Force, and a team of police auxiliary personnel.

On January 15, the victim, identified as Aung Thu, 27, was reported missing while bathing at the beach at 6.10pm.

He is believed to have been swept away by strong currents and is feared to have drowned.
