SAR mounted for man who jumped into river

MUKAH: A search and rescue (SAR) operations is underway for a man feared drown after he was reported to have jumped into a river at Rumah Ajah, Kuala Serupai, Balingian last Sunday (Aug 22).

A spokesman from the state Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said Tatau fire station received a distress call pertaining to the incident late that evening.

It is reported that the victim, identified as Lasu Umpah, 49, jumped into the river around 3.30pm. The incident was witnessed by the victim’s sister-in-law who immediately alerted the family and villagers which prompted a search but to no avail.

Following that, a police report was lodged.

According to the report, the victim has mental health problems and is said to be suffering from depression. He also has a health record in Kuala Tatau health clinic.

The search operation was handed over to Mukah fire station as the location of the incident took place under the administration of the fire station.

Today (Aug 23), the search was conducted with a search radius of 3km upstream and downstream from the victim’s last known location.

A total of 50 rescuers comprising the police, marine police, Civil Defence Force and villagers are involved in the operations.

As at press time, the search is still ongoing and the victim has yet to be found.
