MIRI: The Sarawak government has approved the use of single-dose CanSino Covid-19 vaccine for the rural population.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg disclosed this during his working visit to a vaccination centre (PPV) at Curtin University Sarawak Miri campus today.

Abang Johari was confident that CanSino vaccine would help expedite the vaccination drive in the state.

“The government is expected to receive the first batch of the CanSino Covid-19 vaccine by end of July and the supply to be administered to those residing in the interior areas,” he said.

He added, with the single-dose (CanSino) vaccine, those residing in the interior areas would not need to come to the PPV twice for their vaccination.

“The single-dose vaccine (CanSino) makes it much easier as some of the rural people may not want to come for the second vaccination.

“For instance the Penan, I was told by doctors, that they might not want to come for the second dose jab,” he pointed out.

On another note, Abang Johari was delighted with the current Covid-19 situation in Miri.

“The situation has improved; for instance there has been a significant decline in the number of those bedridden in the intensive care unit (ICU) for severe cases.”

He was also happy to note that the vaccination rate in this district had reached 72.5 percent of its population getting their first dose or 238,772 persons while 35 percent (114, 634) have already been given the second dose.
