KUCHING: The Sarawak government is eagerly awaiting the outcome of talks with the federal government under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) negotiations concerning the return of the General Post Office building situated at Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg here.

Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed that once the negotiations conclude, the heritage building may be transformed into a gallery or museum.

He expressed his delight at the prospect of regaining control of the heritage building, which currently houses Pos Malaysia, and pointed out the importance of preserving it for future generations.

The return of the General Post Office building is among the 52 pieces of land advocated by the Sarawak government under MA63’s land rights category.

“In the past 20 years, there have been no developments in this area. Hence, during the negotiations, we requested for its return, hoping for a smooth process,” Abdul Karim stated during a press conference after observing the full-dress rehearsal of the Sarawak Day 2023 parade at Padang Merdeka on today (July 20).

He also highlighted the existence of several heritage buildings throughout Sarawak, some under local councils or various government departments, which will be preserved and developed as long as they hold historical significance.

“For example, the Rest House in Sri Aman, set for launch in October, where visitors can delve into the history of the communist era in Sarawak.”

Deputy Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu was also present at the press conference.
