KUCHING: Sarawak bagged an award at the recent Los Angeles Film Awards (LAFA) under the ‘Honourable Mention for Commercials’ category for its business events short film titled ‘Sarawak – New Normal in Business Events’.

Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) said this was a first international film win for the Malaysian business events industry – the film was produced as part of its Tribe Legacy Sarawak marketing campaign.

“The short film aimed to educate on the safety protocols when organising, hosting, and attending corporate meetings, cooperate incentives, conventions and exhibitions in Sarawak.

“It opens with a Iban headhunter chasing down an international delegate through the rainforest, but what seems to be a dangerous encounter was in fact a figment of the delegate’s imagination as he gets his temperature scanned at the conference venue, among some of the protocol procedures.

“While the film targets a specific audience, the storyline is widely applauded by the local community for its creative and rather humorous demonstration of Covid-19 precautionary measures and making it relatable to an audience outside of the business events industry,” BESarawak said on Thursday (Aug 18).

Meanwhile, Sarawak Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah applauded BESarawak for the win.

“The ‘Sarawak – New Normal in Business Events’ short film can better enforce Covid-19 prevention measures. I strongly encourage other industries to utilise this film and make it part of their marketing strategy so that we can become a responsible destination.”

Meanwhile, BESarawak chief executive officer Amelia Roziman disclosed that the latest #ResponsibleSarawak – Empowering Socially Responsible Business Events During Covid-19 would be launched soon.

“It is imperative that we organise and host business events that comply with event and crowd safety regulations.

“To restart and protect the industry, we must first educate the industry on what it means to be responsible and how.

“I believe that the short film is going to be an important educational resource that will attract national and international delegates again when the sky opens.”
