MIRI: Travelling between Sarawak and Brunei is now hassle-free with the launch of the Vehicle Monitoring System (VMS).
A simple ceremony was done at the Sungai Tujoh Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) here yesterday by Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting, witnessed by state Customs Department director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha and Miri mayor Adam Yii.
Ting expressed his delight with the system, saying it would help ease traffic movement, as well as entering and exiting Sarawak.
“The system will ensure smooth traffic flow, crossing the border and reduce waiting time,” he said.
He was also optimistic that the system would help boost tourist arrivals to Sarawak, especially from Brunei.
“Brunei has been on our top tourist arrivals list, with nearly two million tourists recorded.”
The VMS had been on a trial run since June 25 at the Sungai Tujoh ICQS. The focus is on non-Malaysians and Malaysians holding permanent resident status of any country.
Via the system, vehicle owners are required to have their vehicle’s Quick Response (QR) code scanned when entering and exiting Malaysia via Sungai Tujoh.
