Sarawak cops make more drug arrests

KUCHING: Sarawak police have made more arrests this year under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 compared to 2020.

Sarawak Commissioner of Police Datuk Aidi Ismail revealed that from January until June 13 this year, 340 arrests were made involving 211 cases under the supply category.

Last year’s figures in the same period and under the same category were 297 arrests involving 209 cases.

“Under Section 39B, narcotics police recorded 77 arrests in 46 cases compared to last year’s 49 arrests in 28 cases, an increase of 28 arrests and 18 cases.

“Under Section 39A (2), narcotics police arrested 22 individuals in 11 cases this year, compared to last year’s 28 arrests in 14 cases.

“For Section 39A (1), narcotics police made 241 arrests in 154 cases compared to last year’s 220 arrests in 167 cases,” he told the media on Monday (June 14).

Meanwhile, in the possession category, 883 arrests were made in 687 cases compared to 1,055 in 714 cases last year.

Comm Aidi pointed out that under Section 12(2), 852 arrests and 659 cases were recorded this year compared to last year’s 980 arrests and 641 cases.

Apart from that, 14 arrests and 12 cases were recorded under Section 6 this year, compared to 46 arrests and 44 cases last year.

Under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, 17 arrests were made in 16 cases this year. Last year, 29 arrests in 29 cases were made.

Comm Aidi added that 2,216 individuals had been arrested under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 this year.

Last year, 3,279 were arrested under the same Section.
