MIRI: The Sarawak government will work together with Verified Carbon Standard, or Verra, to set a concrete proposal in terms of carbon trading, says Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The Verified Carbon Standard, formerly the Voluntary Carbon Standard, is a standard for certifying carbon emissions reductions. VCS is administered by Verra, a 501(c) organisation, or non-profit organisation.

The Premier added that Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Dr Hazland Abang Hipni had been sent to Lisbon on a study visit.

“This is something new and we have to comply with the international protocol on carbon trading.

“We are fortunate that we have the suitable land that can store carbon,” Abang Johari said at a ceremony to present Pantai Bayu Indah the contract for the construction of Shell Malaysia Upstream headquarters at Miri Times Square on Friday (Aug 26).

He said carbon capture and carbon storage were the next areas that Sarawak would be active in.

党The earth (land) must not be moving, it must be geologically stable in order for us to store carbon and fortunately, we are outside the Ring of Fire (a region around much of the rim of the Pacific Ocean where many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur).

“Together with our friend from Sabah, but Sabah might have a little vibration but here in Sarawak so far, there is no vibration happening.

“If you go to southern Borneo, of course you have Java, that is also within the Ring of Fire, compare to us here, we do not have any and hopefully it will continue like this so that we can store our carbon.”

Meanwhile, he said Sarawak needed a lot of expertise and human resource to transform the gas availability in the state.

“The state is committed to working together with its partner in oil and gas, mainly between Petros, Petronas and Shell as well as other contractors in exploring the gas availability for Sarawak heading towards a hydrogen green economy.

“So far, we have good relationship between Petronas and Petros. Actually, the Petronas chairman said we needed two to tango.

“That is why we formed Petros, as a partner for the tango. And we will work together with our partner, particularly Shell who has long history in Sarawak.”

“Not to forget the relationship between the players, Petronas, Petros, Shell and other contractors, which is equally important.

“We are not self-centric, we are not inward looking, people in Sarawak are extroverts. We are going out and we can work with anybody as long as the benefit is shared by the players,” he pointed out.
